The midterm season is upon us, and for the Boston college kids out there, it’s getting real spooky. Lucky for them, studying in a coffee shop seems to be the all-around trick to turning those bad grades into good ones. And isn’t that the treat we all want?
Boston is loaded with the most unique coffee shops, but here are five that really put the “c” in “can we get some more?”:
Ogawa Coffee
10 Milk St, Boston, MA 02108
From a company based in Kyoto, Japan, Ogawa promises something exceptional. Yoshinori Uda, their CEO and President, describes their shop as “a sensory journey to be savored”. Their signature drink is a chilled sweetened espresso served in a martini glass, but it’s their seasonal drink creations that keep the crowd coming. They also provide a pretty tasty breakfast menu. It’s the perfect place to start your mornings off right for a change.

Curio Coffee
441 Cambridge St, Cambridge, MA 02141
While coffee is definitely the most important thing always, Curio Coffee stepped out into a brave territory, and asked the question no one ever thought about: wouldn’t a waffle be the best thing to pair with your afternoon latte? Now before you make that face, don’t knock it ‘til you try it. If anything, just go to the store to get insta-famous. Their shop has over 2000 followers, and their aesthetic is to die for. Between the Apple Cider Waffle and the Gingerbread Waffle, I doubt you’ll be able to think about anything else for a really, long time.

Thinking Cup
85 Newbury St, Boston, MA 02116
While they do have other locations around Boston, Newbury is Thinking Cup’s most popular. Their ambience transports you to another era, quite literally because they have no Wi-Fi. But I suppose this is the time to forego the laptop and grab the books before coming here. The biggest appeal would be their gluten-free and dairy-free breakfast and lunch options. Good looking out, Thinking Cup.

KoHI Coffee Co.
130 Guest St, Brighton, MA 02135
With Brighton being their newest location, this company promises only to serve organic, fair trade espresso drinks, and the taste is worth it. Their Coffee and Conversation events gives a chance to anyone who wants to learn more about the business to get free information here. It also doesn’t hurt that they often team with Flatbread Co. to host these events. Now that’s what I call an excellent pairing. Another Double Ristretto shot please!

Zume’s Coffee House
221 Main St, Charlestown, MA 02129
Now just forget about the coffee altogether with this place because their artsy work is the main attraction. From the quirky, colorful paintings hanging on the wall to the drawings on your coffee mugs, this coffee house gives you a warm atmosphere to truly relax and be at ease. As much as you can relax anyway with midterms here. Hang in there, kids!

There’s a magical place in Boston. With a location in Somerville, in Assembly Square, and Boston, in the Prudential Center, -cue the confetti- Earls Kitchen + Bar, everybody! They have managed to finagle around Massachusetts’ stingy laws against Happy Hour and they have brought the fun back!
Earls is mostly known around town for their $5 monthly drink specials, but this hot, young restaurant brings the happy into brunch as well. Yeah, they got the $5 mimosas, but that’s not even the best part. On top of the modern, artsy architecture, and their rooftop seating area with a wide, beautiful view of the city, Earls brings us a flavor of brunch items ranging from $9-$10. It’s the perfect spot to kick it back with the girls or even meet the parents, all on a budget. Did I mention they’ve got avocado in almost every dish? It’s the perfect addition to every brunch meal. And yeah, let’s keep those $5 mimosas coming.

Ever heard of Get Right Entertainment? Me neither, until last Friday night.
Bored and looking for some weekend trouble, a friend and I scoured Eventbrite to try to find something to do in Boston that didn’t involve frat boys and sorority girls spilling drinks on you. And let’s be real, we’ve had enough of the baseball stuff.
After a long, disheartening two hours of seeing the same ol’ same ol’, I stumbled across an event: “Get Right Fridays” at Causeway Restaurant and Bar. Doing more digging, I found that Get Right Entertainment does an event every Friday night either at Causeway, or at another venue named Kingston Grille and Bar. The flyer promised a mixture of hip-hop, trap, and reggae on two floors, and the ladies were free before 11pm with RSVP.
Being a woman had never felt so great.
Once we got a little dancing and pregaming with moscato done, my friend and I were ready to take on the town. Getting to Causeway way later than 11pm without any RSVP, we found that the cover was $20 per person. Pretty steep, and definitely out of our budgets that night, but luckily, they were willing to take however much we had (a whopping $20 TOTAL).
At this point, our money for drinks was reduced, but to our surprise, the drinks were pretty averagely priced between $10 to $20. And yes, they did have the Henny on deck.
The DJ definitely delivered, and we danced the night away, spillage-free, and with a nice array of eye-candy available. Just for looking of course.

Friday night and you just got paid!? First Fridays are classically known for the celebration of that first of the month paycheck, a fresh start at the end of the work week and a good night out on the town! The Seaport District has great dinner and bar options, but the official event “First Friday’s” at the ICA offers a culmination of food, drinks and entertainment. Scenic views of the city of Boston by the waterfront puts the Institute of Contemporary Art at the top of Boston’s “must visit” list.
Every First Friday, the Institute of Contemporary Art brings in a local DJ, opens up the bar and invites guests in to the galleries. This Friday, the museum featured a 3D snowflake making class, holiday karaoke and a complimentary beer from Octoberfest!
If you love a diverse crowd of working, artsy and international professionals, then you will love the scene at the ICA. Members are free and non-members can join in on the fun for $15. The ICA is perfect to entertain guests out of town or for date night!
